April 2019 -

Donald Simpson Centre

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors attended a New Members Morning Tea at the Donald Simpson Centre in Cleveland.

The Centre was opened in 1987 with funds from State and Local Government and donations from the community. Its purpose is to provide a venue for social, intellectual and physical activities for the seniors and future seniors of the Redland Community and the neighbouring areas.

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors are proud to sponsor the centre and be involved in the Redland Community.

Sports Club Sponsorships

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors are very committed to assisting Brisbane communities and currently support 35 Lawn Bowls Clubs in the greater Brisbane area. Celebrating International Women's Day 2019

International Women’s Day 2019 is an opportunity to acknowledge women everywhere, including the women of K.M.Smith Funeral Directors, past and present.

Following her husband's untimely death in 1886, the company was named by a woman: Kate Mary Smith - the pioneering owner operator behind the initials. Remarkably, Kate ran the business alone whilst raising six children, aged then from six to seventeen. She became Brisbane's first lady Funeral Director, in a time when women did not yet have the right to vote and were rare in positions of leadership or industry. She is the first lady of Queensland funerals.

Today, over 135 years later, her Great-granddaughter Denise Smith sits on the Board of the company that is part of Brisbane history. A strong female team continue within K.M.Smith ensuring Kate Mary’s legacy of a feminine touch remains at the core of K.M.Smith Funeral Directors.

Wallaby Airlines Sponsorship

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors CEO Laurel Shanley and Promotions Manager Jennie McIntosh are pictured with John McDougall, Chairman RTFV-35SQN, being presented scarves with the Squadron emblem in appreciation of our sponsorship and support of Wallaby Airlines.

No. 35 Squadron was formed at RAAF Base Pearce on 11th March 1942.The first deployment to Vietnam was known as RAAF Transport Flight to Vietnam. RTFV-35SQN using the call sign "Wallaby" and later became known as "Wallaby Airlines".

All the members of the Squadron have proudly served our country and are committed to keeping the history of the Caribou alive.

CRA Ritual of Remembrance

Catholic Religious Australia (CRA) is the peak body of leaders of Religious Institutions and Societies of the Apostolic Life resident in Australia. Every year CRA Queensland co-ordinate the Ritual of Remembrance along with the leaders of the religious congregations in Queensland.

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors again this year, assisted with the ceremony held in the gardens of the Nudgee Cemetery. Pictured are Sharon and Bonnie Eichmann on the day.

Therapy Dog Nate

Phoebe, K.M.Smith's Goodna Branch Manager with “Nate”, her Therapy Dog. Phoebe and Nate visit Nursing Homes and Aged Care Facilities, bringing smiles and joy to all they encounter. Therapy Dogs can also play an important part in the grief process.

Fundraising Luncheon with Zonta Club of Wynnum

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors attended a Fundraising Luncheon held at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Manly with Zonta Club of Wynnum Redland. Zonta International is a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. Guest speakers included Mayor of Redland, Karen Williams. Catholic Funeral Short Course with ACU

As K.M.Smith is the leading Catholic funeral provider in Brisbane, we were contacted to partner with the Australian Catholic University Centre for Liturgy to contribute to running a short course on Preparing and Celebrating Catholic Funerals. The day was divided into four sessions and one of our experienced Funeral Directors, Massimo Nodari was invited to engage in a conversation with Catholic priest Father Tom Elich as part of the day. K.M.Smith staff attended the course and were at hand for any questions that the attendees may have had about the Funeral Industry.

2018 Care Expo

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors attended the Care Expo held on the weekend at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. The Expo provided unparalleled access to over 120 exhibitors showcasing a myriad of new technology, new products, services and support networks. The expo was the first of its kind in Australia and was a well attended event.

New Mt Gravatt Branch

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors were proud to have a stand at Mt Gravatt Plaza Shopping Centre to meet and greet the local residents and let them know of our new office now open on Logan Road, Mt Gravatt.

It was an opportunity for them to meet our Branch Manager, Michelle Glass, and obtain some information on Pre-Arrangements and Funeral Bonds. K.M.Smith was warmly welcomed by the shoppers.

K.M.Smith Staff Barefoot Bowls Day

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors staff and families came together on the weekend at the New Farm Bowls Club for a social game of Barefoot Bowls. A few budding professionals showed their talents as did a few incorrect bowls bias. It was great to catch up outside of work hours and a laugh was enjoyed by all.

Kate Mary - 86 Years Since Passing

The family and staff of K.M.Smith Funeral Directors took the time this year to remember the passing of our founder and Queensland's first lady funeral director, Kate Mary Smith. June 13th, 2018 marks the 86th year since her death. Her legacy proudly continues within the company.

CRAqld Luncheon

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors Jennie McIntosh, Kimble Hough and Sharon Eichmann, joined Nudgee Cemetery Manager David Malloy and the Leaders of Religious Institutes in Queensland at a luncheon in Brisbane to mark the closure of CRAqld.

Jindalee Bowls Club 'Commonwealth Day'

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors were very happy to sponsor the Jindalee Bowls Club on their Commonwealth Day in April. The ladies and the men dressed in all things Commonwealth to celebrate the current games being played on the Gold Coast.

Filipino Community Support

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors sponsored donations of Fruit and Grocery Hampers to support the 1st year anniversary celebrations of the 'Pinoy Shop' at Lawnton - the shop has become a hub for the Filipino community of Lawnton, Strathpine and surrounding areas and K.M.Smith is proud to support it's role in the community.

November 2017 -

Intenciti Church Donation

K.M.Smith Promotions Manager Jennie McIntosh presented a cheque to Pastor Margie Scown from Intenciti Church at Wynnum as a donation towards Food Assistance Packs, an all round pack of groceries, including fresh produce and canned products, designed to help those struggling on low income, loss of a family member or people transitioning into parole. The church rely solely on donations to fund this activity for the needy in the community.

Brisbane Bayside Volunteer Crime Stoppers Halloween Golf Day

K.M.Smith was proud to be a Hole Sponsor for the Brisbane Bayside Volunteer Crime Stoppers Halloween Golf Day, held at the Redland Bay Golf Club on Friday 13th October. K.M.Smith added to the Halloween theme by having a hearse at the 10th hole. Proceeds from the day go to assist Crime Stoppers Queensland, which is a registered volunteer organisation that provides and promotes anonymous contact mediums for the public to report information to help make a difference in stopping, solving and preventing crime.

Ipswich Turf Club Legacy Race Day Fundraiser

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors were proud to sponsor a race at this years Ipswich Turf Club Legacy Race Day Fundraiser. Legacy is a charity providing services to Australian families suffering financially and socially after the incapacitation or death of a spouse or parent, during or after their defence service.

Dickson Seniors' Expo

Once again K.M.Smith Funeral Directors attended the Dickson Seniors' Expo at Strathpine Community Centre. It proved to be a very successful two days with entertainment, stalls and catering for the over 60's. K.M.Smith offered advice on Funerals, Preplanning and Funeral Bonds.

Kate Mary - 85 Years Since Passing

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors family and staff took the time today, June 13th, 2017 to remember the remarkable lady that our company is named after, Kate Mary Smith, who passed away 85 years ago.

Meeting Dr. Alan Wolfelt

K.M.Smith staff enjoyed a rich and enlightening day with Dr Wolfelt to learn more about the importance of the funeral ceremony and how this benefits those that are left behind.

Dr Alan Wolfelt, Ph.D, educates across the world on how meaningful funeral experiences help families enormously when it comes to integrating loss into our lives. He is the Director for the Centre for Loss and Life Transition in Colorado and author of an extensive range of books on the subjects of grief, mourning and meaningful ceremonies. www.centerforloss.com

All Saints Parish, Albany Creek

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors Branch Manager, Russell Galvin, presented a cheque to Father Ron Mollison as a donation towards the Annual Fair of the Church and Primary School of All Saints Parish, Albany Creek.

Taigum Shopping Centre

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors attended the Taigum Shopping Centre for two days in February. Being in their own environment means that it is an approachable atmosphere for shoppers to enquire about Funeral advice, information on Pre Planning a Funeral and Funeral Bonds.

RSL Care Inverpine 20th Birthday

K.M.Smith Branch Manager Geoff McKnigt presented a confectionery basket, to be used for a lucky door prize, to RSL Care Inverpine, Murrumba Downs to help them celebrate their 20th Birthday.

Horse and Carriage Hearse

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors, along with 'Dray Horse Shires', helped grant a final wish for a lady who dreamt of a horse-drawn hearse for her funeral. Her white coffin with gold trim, and the pastel flowers in the casket spray were beautifully showcased in the glass carriage, making the lady's final journey most dignified and memorable.

October 2016 -

Lion's Christmas Cakes

Australian Lions Drug Awareness Foundation, Lions Prostate Cancer Awareness Project and Medical Research Foundations will benefit because K.M. Smith Funeral Directors purchased 144 Christmas Cakes for distribution to Retirement Homes, Aged Care Facilities and Church Groups to whom all will benefit by donation of the Lions Cakes to their organisations.

Victoria Point Shopping Centre

K.M.Smith attended the Victoria Point Shopping Centre for three days. We offered Funeral advice and information on Funeral Bonds. The shoppers opened up more to asking questions about Funerals and this we believe is because they were more comfortable to approach us in their own environment.

Holy Spirit Carnival

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors was a major sponsor of the Holy Spirit Community Parish and School Carnival. We organised a marquee that had brochures and information about Funerals, this was well received by the community especially our sponsorship on the day.

Bellevue Care Centre Raffle

K.M.Smith Arana Hills Branch Manager Marion Sciasci, presented a Confectionary Basket to Kathy Cook, Company Director of Bellevue Care Centre, Ferny Hills. The proceeds from the raffle of the basket will be donated to assist research into Lyme Disease.

Dickson's Senior Expo

K.M.Smith attended the Dickson's Seniors Expo at Strathpine Community Centre. We offered advice to assist the Seniors Community to prearrange their funeral and also to pay for Funeral Bonds, this was supported by brochures and giveaways.

Clifford House - 25th Anniversary

Clifford House, Carinity Baptist Community Aged Care situated in Wooloowin, celebrated their 25th Anniversary on Thursday 4th August 2016.

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors supported Clifford House by providing beautiful fresh floral posies for each of the dining room tables and entrances to the Aged Care facility.

St Peter's Anglican Church Fete - Wynnum

St Peter's Anglican Church, Charlotte Street Wynnum, celebrated their annual church fete in July with gloriously warm winter weather. K.M.Smith were there manning the BBQ and enjoying the local community atmosphere.

CCR National Conference

The Catholic Charismatic Renewal National Conference was held at St. Leo's College within the University of Queensland at St. Lucia. Over 200 people attended the three day conference with K.M.Smith Funeral Directors sponsoring the morning tea. Archbishop Mark Coleridge celebrated the opening Mass. The Conference was in response to the call of Pope Francis to Renewal. He said, "To share with all in the Church the baptism you have received".

Palliative Care Week

A special Thanksgiving Service was held at St John’s Anglican Cathedral on Thursday 27th May commemorating National Palliative Care Week 22-28 May. K.M.Smith staff joined with clergy, dignitaries and industry specialists in paying tribute to the remarkable service provided by local palliative care professionals and volunteers, tirelessly working to assist people to live well with terminal illness.

Sorry Day

A Sorry Day ceremony was held by the river at the Sherwood Arboretum on Thursday 26th May. Elders, school children, local families and K.M.Smith Funeral Directors from our Sherwood branch attended the ceremony in the park and stayed on to share breakfast together.
